I have good search rankings AND I have been using this method, but I can't state exactly how much it's helped since I'm not tracking it.  My feeling is that if Matt Cutts from Google states that it will have an effect, that I trust his judgement!

I do tend to see results with semantic URLs much more than I see other results, though.
