Find the Right Words

If you’d like to maximize your Search Engine results, one of the key strategies is the use of synonyms and pluralities throughout key elements of your blog post. Knowing what people are actually searching for is a challenging, but fruitful exercise in ensuring your content will be found.

There are a few places where you should be varying your keywords in each and every blog post.

Keyword Locations with the most Impact:

  1. Within your post’s title, selection of a great title as well as supplying great keywords is key.
  2. Within your post’s slug. An important takeaway from this video with Matt Cutts is that Google does index words within your URL that are delimited, even if it’s simply the name of your web page.

If you’re running semantic URLs in WordPress (Options>Permalinks) - and you should be - selecting a great post slug is very important. You should vary the post slug a little from your actual post title to get great exposure.

Take a look at this post… the title is “Find the Right Words”, but the post slug is “Keyword Search”. Now I’ve got words, keyword, find, and search all indexed nicely.

  3. Within your blog’s content. Utilizing heading tags (h1 and h2) has also been known to provide lift as well. Search engines are intelligent enough to recognize that heading tags are important pieces of information.

Don’t (please don’t!) use <font> tags to set size and weight to put a heading in your post, use h1 and h2 tags so your emphasis isn’t wasted on readers only - but also works the search engines.

  4. Last, but not least, the latest version of WordPress incorporates tagging seamlessly into each post. Finding and writing keywords can be difficult, unless you’re a walking thesaurus. An even better approach would be to utilize a Keyword service, though. I’ve been testing one such service with a great WordPress plugin for a week now and I love it.

Wordsfinder will automatically scan your blog post content and come up with the best keywords to tag the post with. Wordsfinder unique tools are ideal for effective web copy, SEO, SEM and automatic tagging.

Wordsfinder

Keyword ListPerhaps the nicest thing about Wordsfinder is that they built a plugin for WordPress to do the work for you. It’s simple, quick, and works brilliantly.

As well, when I emailed the folks at Wordsfinder with a couple of recommendations, they immediately built them into the plugin and put it into production.

Finding the right words for your keywords, tags, titles, headings, and post slug just got a little easier!

I hadn’t thought about using different phrases for my post title and post slug. Have you experienced good search rankings from this? Thanks for the tip.

Hi Jon,

I have good search rankings AND I have been using this method, but I can’t state exactly how much it’s helped since I’m not tracking it. My feeling is that if Matt Cutts from Google states that it will have an effect, that I trust his judgement!

I do tend to see results with semantic URLs much more than I see other results, though.

You’re most welcome!
Doug
