NoIndex your Feed on FeedBurner

Recently, I’ve been working on my site some more to improve it’s Search Engine placement. The changes have resulted in some incremental changes in my Search Engine placement. I’ll continue to share the results with you as I move forward. One of the recent changes I made was redirecting any traffic from http://douglaskarr.com to http://www.douglaskarr.com. I want the www to be my primary domain where my articles are identified from. I’m not sure what kind of impact this will have - we’ll see.

I read an article today at Marketing Pilgrim on optimizing your feed. Pretty interesting, I didn’t realize that you might actually get penalized by search engines for duplicate content just because your RSS feed is out there! The article notes that providing a noindex meta tag in your feed will prevent search engines from indexing your feed page.

Sure enough, I found a setting in Feedburner that allows this. Here’s a screenshot. The option is defaulted off so you’ll need to turn NoIndex on and save your settings.

Noindex on FeedBurner

Feedburner is an outstanding service. The more I use it, the more I’m impressed. You’ll find a number of posts on my site regarding their service and integrating it into your site. A step-by-step implementation is in the Blogging E-metrics guide I wrote.

You bet, Tracy. I actually never noticed it until today! I’ve said in the past that Feedburner is an incredible tool, just tough to get around.

Great tip Douglas!

I noticed that option when I was first configuring my Feedburner feeds, but I figured “sure… why not let the search engines index my feed, it will only help, right!”

Apparently I was wrong. :)

Another thank you for the tip, Douglas. I implemented it right away. It was interesting to see that they have the checkbox to implement nofollow prechecked, but not activated.

Thanks for the tip. I already had it selected, but hadn’t realized why (never really looked).

Hmmm, the feature was already activate on my feed. Is it possible that they enable it by default?

Good one Doug!

In addition to this use robots.txt and exclude your feeds from it!

Cheers!

Alpesh,

That’s a great idea. What’s the easiest way to do that?

You are ranking well in Technorati searches. That is how I found your blog - twice - by accident each time.

I figured if stuff I was searching for brought me to you twice in a week, that’s deserving of a bookmark :-)

Feedburner is also a PR 8 site so those links are some nice juice. Although, I’m not sure how click-tracking comes into play.
